How to access Siyavula
Learn without limits:
Siyavula is zero-rated across MTN and Cell-C in South Africa so that learners can practice without being charged. Using Siyavula still uses data, but your mobile network will not charge you for it. Think of it as a “free pass” from your network provider for using an educational site.
Keep your data "ON": Your mobile data must be switched on so the network can see you are on Siyavula and give you the free pass.
Stay on Siyavula: We host our own videos and questions right here. As long as you stay on our website or app, your data balance should stay the same.
- No coverage: If you have no mobile coverage in your area, zero-rated websites and apps will not work.
- App updates: Downloading or updating the Siyavula app from the App Store will cost you data, unless your network provider happens to have zero-rated the App Store itself.
- External links: If you click a link that takes you to a different website outside of Siyavula (like YouTube or a news site), your network will start charging you for data again.
While we do our best to keep access free, please keep in mind that each mobile operator sets their own terms and conditions, which are outside of Siyavula’s control.

- Switch on your data connection (whether you have data or not on your device)

- Go to your search engine or internet browser (Google Chrome, Safari, Firefox etc.) and type the Siyavula website URL in full https://www.siyavula.com

- Once you land on the Siyavula website, click on log in

- You can log in with your credentials

- Then you will land on your home page and be able to begin practising Maths and Science questions on Siyavula.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Why must my mobile data be switched on? Even though you aren't paying for data, your network operator needs to verify your SIM card to know who you are. Zero-rating doesn’t mean no data is used, it just means you are not* charged *for the data that is used.
- What happens if my mobile data is off? If you turn your mobile data off completely, your device cannot connect to the network to request that "free access" pass, which means you won't be able to reach our site at all.
- Do I need a positive airtime balance to access the site? This is the tricky bit. While most mobile operators do not need airtime or a data balance to access zero-rated sites, we have found that some networks do require a positive data balance to work.
- Why do I need airtime or data to start? Some networks need you to have a tiny bit of airtime (even just R1) or a little bit of data to "open the door". Once you are on Siyavula, they stop charging you and let you browse for free.
- Does this apply to all mobile networks? No, our partnership with major mobile network operators in South Africa include MTN and Cell-C. We are investigating how to expand our zero-rating to other networks.
- What if I'm using a Wifi connection? If you are using Wifi, you are already using internet connection, so the zero-rating benefit isn't required. You can use our site as much as you like!
- How can I be sure Siyavula isn't using my data? Check your phone stats. Monitor your "Data Usage" or "Mobile Service" stats in your phone’s settings before and after a study session to see that you weren’t charged for the data consumed by your browser. Please note that some providers may have a delay of up to 24 hours to reflect usage stats.
