Assign the Mastery Activity

Assigning a Mastery Activity on Siyavula

A Mastery Activity is an assessment version of the original adaptive practice for mastery feature. It allows teachers to assign practice goals that they want learners to achieve, and to schedule a timeframe for which the mastery practice should be completed. The Siyavula algorithm makes the practice to be adaptive to an individual learner, ensuring that each learner progresses at their own pace.

Note: This feature is available on the paid packages: Essentials and Advanced. If you are on verified access and wish to upgrade, contact sales@siyavula.com

You can use the Mastery Activity to:

  • Activate prior learning: Recap work from a previous grade to prepare for a new topic
  • Consolidation: Assign to practice and master content that has been covered in class
  • Build mastery: Generative questions and gradual increase of level of difficulty allow learners to build mastery and confidence
  • Remediate: The algorithm tailors each learner's experience, providing extra support for learners who need help closing gaps

How to assign the Mastery Activity

  1. On the menu panel, click on Assign Work, and select Assessments.

  1. On the Assessments page, click on Mastery Activity
  2. Select the subject.
Note: If you are configured for one subject. You will see only one subject.

  1. Select a section that you want to assign, by clicking the dot on the far-right of the screen.

You can select a section from any grade. This means you can assign a Grade 11 section to your grade 10 learners.

Note: Clicking the section will reveal grade level questions that are under the selected section. However, learners will not experience adaptive practice in the same sequence. And when a learner struggles to master the section, the algorithm many give the learner lower grade or easier questions to help them master basics first.

  1. Scroll to the bottom or top of the screen, and click on the right facing arrow to proceed.

  1. On the settings page, start with giving your assessment a unique title so that it will be easy for you to find it.

  1. Set the goals for your learners: mastery stars and maximum number of questions. By default you will find 3 stars and maximum 25 questions. You can change these as desired.

f you choose very few questions, that will be unrealistic to achieve the selected mastery stars, you will get an error message as shown below.

  1. Scroll to the bottom or top of the screen, and click on the right facing arrow to proceed.
  2. Select the class(es) that you would like to send the assessment to by ticking the box on the far-left column.
  3. You have an option to type a short message to your learners, as shown below.

  1. Schedule the assessment to the desired date and time, and then click Send Now.

You can save the assessment as draft if you are not yet ready to send it.

Important note: The mastery practice activity of the selected section outside this assessment will affect the results of the assessment if completed within the due date. If a learner had already achieved the indicated mastery goal for assigned section, the assessment will be considered completed.
